Jan and Jul Snow Outdoor Gear Review: Kids Gear at a Great Price
Last Updated on May 16, 2025 by Audrey
My kids love to play outside in the snow. Most snowy days will see my kids outside until dark, so of course I look for gear that can keep my kids warm and dry, even on wet, chilly days. This winter, we tested the Jan and Jul waterproof snowsuit and Jan and Jul’s thermal base layers. We also had the opportunity to test Jan and Jul’s gear for rainy weather and sunny summer days. After putting it to the test, we love Jan and Jul Kids Gear for all seasons! They’re the perfect option for families looking for high-quality outdoor gear for kids at an affordable price.
Jan and Jul is a Canadian-based kid’s gear brand, known for creating great outdoor gear that kids will love, even in extreme temperatures.

Best Snowsuits for Playtime
The Jan and Jul Toasty-Dry snow suit is a fantastic snowsuit at a reasonable price. With a windproof outer shell and 220g of insulation, this snowsuit will keep your kid toasty dry down to -22 F/-30 C!
What we love for playtime outside:
- With waterproof protection up to 10K mm, this snowsuit will keep your kids dry and cozy in wet weather.
- The adjustable hood with additional secure fit is a great feature to prevent the hood from slipping off during playtime.
- 100% recycled fabrics means I can trust that we’re not contributing to the staggering waste from clothing.
- The inner adjustment toggles allows my daughter the perfect fit for her body.
Jan and Jul Snowsuit for Skiing
My daughter has worn her Jan and Jul snowsuit skiing several times this winter. While it works well for skiing, it lacks some skiing specific details that other ski suits or ski outfits include.
What works well:
- The ankle bands fits snugly around my daughter’s ski boots, and we’re able to keep the cuff from getting caught in her ski binding.
- The hood is a snug fit with her helmet, but it does work when using the hood adjuster fully opened.
- I like the reflective features, especially during night skiing on a crowded ski hill!
- The adorable and bright pattern makes it easy to spot my daughter, even if she’s skiing off the groomed runs.
- The size 5T is a perfect fit for my 5-year-old.
- Jan and Jul’s snowsuits feature adjustable hoods, perfect for keeping little ears cozy while out in the snow.
What doesn’t work well for skiing:
- This is a heavy snowsuit, making it better for playing in cold conditions, as opposed to skiing.
- No pit zips means it’s not as well ventilated as other options.
- There isn’t a pass pocket on the arm. That’s not necessarily a deal breaker, but my daughter does have to lean over to get her pass to scan.
Overall, the Jan and Jul Waterproof Snowsuit is a great choice for skiers looking for a versatile snowsuit made with durable, high quality materials, but for a lower price than competitors. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a snowsuit that is functional on the slopes and off the slopes— especially if you have cold conditions frequently!

Jan and Jul Thermal Base Layers
I feel like the Jan and Jul base layers are a secret that need to be shared! Base layers that are thick, warm, and cozy all at a great price?
Yes, please!
My daughter has worn her thermal base layers skiing every weekend for the last two months, and they’re holding up great! We haven’t seen any piling or wear and tear from all this use (and washing!)
What we love about the Jan and Jul Thermal Base Layers:
- Soft, stretchy fabric
- Thick, warm layers that are perfect for cold winter days
- Simple style that works for everyday play, not just as ski base layers.
- Durable fabrics that hold up to kids’ wear and tear.
Best Winter Mittens for Kids
The Jan and Jul mittens are such a great bang for your buck! They feature not only an adjustable wrist strap but also an adjustable toggle on the long cuff. They also feature the same 3M Thinsulate insulation as other, more expensive mittens. There are a variety of color and pattern options for the waterproof outer layer. Since they’re at a lower price point, I love using these mittens for school recess.
Jan and Jul Rain Gear
Over the past few months, we’ve been delighted to try Jan and Jul’s gear for rainy days. We’ve enjoyed a forest hike through the rain, and rainy afternoons splashing in puddles to put Jan and Jul’s rain jackets and waterproof suits to the test.

Kids Rain Jackets
We’ve been making the most of the cozy-dry rain jacket from Jan and Jul. Its cozy fleece interior is perfect for chilly spring days in the northwest, and the waterproof exterior is a great option for even the wettest weather. With a waterproof rating of 10K MM and taped seams, this coat works great to keep kids dry. Unlike a lot of waterproofing material on the market, Jan and Jul’s waterproof jackets are made of a biodegradable dwr coating that’s kid-safe and better for the environment than more toxic options. I also like this rain jacket is made of durable and soil-repellent fabric, making it a great choice for kids who like to get muddy! We had mud stains on the fabric that I was convinced wouldn’t be coming out, but the machine washable fabric cleaned up so nicely that we didn’t have any dirt residue left on the gear. Elasticized wrists keep water out of the coat’s interior.
If the fleece lining sounds like too much for your family, consider the lighter version. The puddle-dry jackets are the perfect choice for kids who want flexibility with their gear. Choose to wear it as a simple rain jacket shell, or add extra layers for cooler days.
Jan and Jul Puddle-Dry Rain Pants
There’s nothing better than a matching set for outdoor gear! I love that the puddle-dry rain pants come in coordinating colors with the rain jackets. The rugged outside fabric works great for active and fast kids who want to test their gear to the breaking point! My kids have climbed rocks, slid down muddy and rocky hills, run through puddles, and there’s been very little wear and tear on these pants. It’s the kind of gear that’s going to get a ton of use without showing signs of long-term wear.
Like Jan and Jul’s other rain gear, you’ll find 10k waterproofing, active breathability, and windproofing.
Kids Thin-Lined Rain Suits
We’ve already been big fans of Jan and Jul Gear for awhile. My daughter obsessively wore her Toasty-Dry Snowsuit over the winter, so it was no surprise that she’s been crazy about her rain suit. This waterproof suit features a stay-put hood, elastic wrist cuffs and ankle cuffs, and perfect waterproofing for even the wettest days. One of the things I love about this rain suit is its ease of use. My preschooler can easily get into her rainsuit on her own, making it a great option for outdoor play at outdoor-based daycare or outdoor school.

Women’s Waterproof Rain Jackets
I’ve been wearing the Women’s Atlantic Jacket almost every day this spring! It’s the perfect lightweight, stylish jacket that goes seamlessly from school pick up and drop off to playdates at the park and short, wet spring hikes. The four-way stretch fabric makes it comfortable for moving, while the stylish A-lined silhouette works perfectly for my whole wardrobe! Even on cool, sunny days I’ve been grabbing this jacket over other options for its versatility.
Bonus: the 10K MM waterproofing holds up perfectly for unexpected showers. Seriously, I grab this jacket and throw it in my car just in case every day!
Jan and Jul Gear for Sunny Days

Jan and Jul Sun Hats are the perfect choice for keeping the sun off delicate skin. My son’s been wearing his Cotton Floppy Hat on the rare sunny day this spring. I love that it has UPF 50 protection without harsh chemicals.
Jan and Jul Swimwear
Since we live on a lake, we’re at the beach nearly every day during the summer. One thing I try to take seriously is protecting my kids’ skin. As a child of the late 80s and 90s, I wasn’t always diligent with skincare, and neither were my parents! I was out there trying to earn my tan lines, not thinking about the lifetime of damage I’d be doing to my skin. That’s not happening for my kiddos! That’s why I’ve loved Jan and Jul’s UV Rashguard sets for my daughter. It’s so easy to find full coverage suits for boys, but stylish and cute rashguard sets for girls aren’t always easy to come by. With sizes from 2T to Kids Large, we can continue to count on Jan and Jul’s swimwear for years to come, making sure my daughter has the same sun protection in her swimwear as my son has!
Best Kids Outdoor Clothes
Jan and Jul is a great choice for parents looking for great kids’ gear at a lower price than other competitors. Their gear is perfect for all types of weather conditions- from sunny days to mild winter days, and even blustery, cold days.
Jan and Jul’s gear is built to last, allowing kids to pass their gear down to siblings or friends. Whether you’re going for a blustery walk in the rain, or getting into snowy escapades on a wintry afternoon, Jan and Jul has just what you need to get your kids outdoors in all types of weather.
