What to Look for in Kids’ Rain Gear

When shopping for kids’ rain gear, you may be tempted to choose cheaper gear. Cheap rain jackets can work for short trips between the car and school, or even a walk around the neighborhood after a rainstorm. However, cheap gear will lack the waterproofing and breathability of higher-quality outdoor gear.

Nobody wants to be sweating in their rain gear, or wet from the lack of waterproof fabric, especially if you are planning on any bigger adventures in rainy weather. If you’re considering camping, rain is always a possibility. If you want to hike or bike on trails with your kids, choosing outdoor gear designed with durable fabrics and breathable material will make your family’s outdoor adventures much better.

Another consideration for purchasing Reima’s outdoor gear is that all Reima rain gear is made of PVC-free material, making it 100% non-toxic.  Don’t let cheap gear prevent your family from making the most of their outdoor time together. Everyone in the family deserves to have protection against the elements, and Reima has a long-standing reputation for providing high-quality outdoor gear for kids of all ages, from babies and toddlers to teens. Choosing the right gear for your family’s outdoor life starts with prioritizing quality, and Reima is an excellent option for great gear.

Waterproofing Rating System

Outdoor gear is rated for its waterproofing using a scale that measure the amount of water in millimeters a piece of fabric can withstand before it starts to leak. The higher the number, the better. Anything under 5,000 mm (5K mm) isn’t going to keep your kids dry for long, while something up to 10K or even 20K mm will keep kids dry, while still allowing breathability. Reima’s rain gear is all rated at 10K or higher, making it a great option for keeping kids dry, even in heavy rain.

Reima Rain Jackets

We’ve been using and recommending Reima’s rain jackets since our kids were toddlers. Reima has two lines of rain jackets, their rubber waterproof jacket collection that’s perfect for toddlers, and the breathable, windproof, and waterproof ReimaTec gear. Both are durable and great for wet weather, but I find that as my kids grow older they’re more interested in wearing the ReimaTec gear vs. the classic rubber gear. This is just a preference thing on their part, and your kids may be totally different!

Reima Tuulos

The Reima Tuulos features 10K waterproofing, with excellent breathability that works well for active play in good or bad weather. The outer shell easily fits over a mid layer puffy or fleece jacket, making it perfect for blustery spring days. I also like the detachable hood for when we use this jacket for wind protection, and the reflective details are great for evening bike rides or walks around a busy campground. Also, the bright blue and with dark blue details is a great look for big kids who want bold colors that look more grown up.

Reima Tomelia

I love the fun, bright colors that Reima Tomelia comes in! I’m a sucker for a cute pattern, and Tomelia has so many fun pattern options. The adjustable hood makes it easy to fit over a hat. It also has ReimaTec’s waterproof fabric rated at 10K mm and breathability for 7,000 grams, making it a waterproof and windproof jacket with excellent breathability and adorable patterns! The waterproof welded seams keep moisture out, and the flexible material makes play and outdoor exploration easy. I also like the longer coat length, giving your little girl great coverage for keeping dry during active play at the playground or during a recess break on a school day.

Reima Soutu

If you prefer solid colors, the Reima Soutu is the perfect choice for a kids’ rain jacket. Featuring the same high-quality ReimaTec material as the other options I’ve shared, this is a good jacket for active kids who like to play hard and need gear to keep up! The water and dirt repellent material is also machine washable and easy to care for. The high water column and breathability rating makes it perfect for stormy, windy days.

Reima Lampi

The Reima Lampi is a traditional kids’ rain jacket made of recycled polyester and polyurethane coating. Its materials are perfect for active toddlers and young kids who love to get muddy on rainy days. With 6 cm of growing room, this jacket gives it a roomy fit that’s also perfect for layering. I love the solid colors, especially the rose blush pink.

Reima Vesi

The Reima Vesi is the Lampi’s bold patterned cousin, coming in bright and fun colors for young children. The snap button hood makes it easy to use for other activities, and the hood is spacious enough to fit a bike helmet.

Reima Rain Pants

When it comes to rain pants, I typically use them for my kids in two conditions: 1. Cold, rainy weather where I know we’re at risk of getting chilly without additional insulation and water protection, or 2. Conditions where I know my kids aren’t going to be able to resist puddle jumping. Recently, we found ourselves in the first situation, out in the elements along a remote river. Thanks to their Reima gear, my kids didn’t even complain as we were getting pelted with a mix of rain and ice in 45-degree weather! That, to me, is the sign of great gear. Even bad weather doesn’t get in the way of a great time outside with family.

Reima Sampu

That situation with ice and rain pelting us as we were out beside a remote river in Idaho? My son was wearing the Reima Sampu, and they held up perfectly. to the elements. These lightweight and breathable pants have a waterproofing of up to 10K mm and are reinforced with durable patches on the legs and backside. The stylish design also got approval from my son, who’s become pretty picky about making sure his clothes look a certain way. In fact, they’re the only pair of rain pants he grabs now, no longer liking rain pants with elastic ankles. However, I like that the hidden cord adjustment at the ankle makes a more secure fit possible!

Reima Kaura

The Reima Kaura feature detachable and adjustable footloops, making a good fit possible over rain boots. I like that these pants are also easy to put on, with an elastic, adjustable waist and elastic cuffs on the legs. I’m also a sucker for the candy pink color, a favorite for me and my daughter. The durable and waterproof material is also a great feature, just like all of ReimaTec products. It’s made to last at least a couple of years and can be passed down to siblings or friends.

Reima Lammikko

The Reima Lammikko is a great option for young children and toddlers because of the waterproof bib design and the rubber material. It’s great to keep mud and water off young kids, and these pants are easy to clean up after a day playing in the rain and mud. My kids wore this style of rain pants for years, and I always thought they looked adorable in the rain bibs!

Reima Rain Suits

Reima is famous for its high-quality snow suits, so it’s no surprise that they know how to make an amazing rain suit too!

Reima Tipotella

The Reima Tipotella is the perfect rain suit for toddlers and young children! It’s a packaged combination of Reima’s rubber rain bibs and rubber rain jacket, making it also a fantastic deal on rain gear for little kids. I love that this rubber rain gear is still in perfect condition, even after heavy use, thanks to easy cleaning in the washer. Ours lasted for several seasons before my kids finally grew out of them, but the waterproofing is still working, even after years of wear and tear.

Reima Toppila

The Reima Toppila is a one-piece suit that’s perfect for little ones playing on a rainy day. With sizing from 9-12 months up to 3T, this is the perfect rain suit for babies and toddlers.

Reima Shoes

We’ve used Reima’s winter boots for years, but hadn’t tried their collection for year round use. Until recently, I hadn’t realized that Reima also made footwear utilizing the ReimaTec  materials. What is results in is a comfortable, well-built shoe that is also waterproof. We’ve also gotten a chance to try the barefoot shoes, and rolling step shoes.

Reima Hiipien

The Reima Hiipien has quickly become our kids’ favorite versatile shoe for cool winter days through shoulder season play. With a waterproof membrane and a flexible, but grippy sole, these shoes are an excellent option for hikes in wet, cool conditions. My son is so crazy about them that he’s still wearing them in hotter conditions because they’re so comfortable. Also, he managed to get them partially in the lake, and the waterproof membrane held strong! He still had dry feet after the dunk!

Reima Rullari

The Reima Rullari is part of the new Rolling Step collection from Reima. These sneakers are designed to enable fluid, rolling steps that allow for active play in kids. Our daughter has gotten plenty of use out of them, both on the playground and for light hiking. These shoes have proven to be a durable and comfortable shoe for outside play. They are not waterproof, but still make a great outdoor shoe for transitioning into warmer weather.

Reima Tallustelu

Initially, when we tried the Reima Tallustelu I was a little skeptical if my kids would like them or not. They’ve never worn barefoot shoes, and I was prepared to send them to my nephew, who wears barefoot shoes exclusively. However, both my kids have really liked the ReimaTec barefoot shoe. Not only are they meant to mimic a natural stance, but they’re also waterproof, making them the perfect spring sneaker. My kids like to wear them to the playground, skate park, and on short hikes. I like that they are easy to put on, and the elastic laces are simple to use. They also have the American Podiatric Medal of Approval.

Reima Waterproof Accessories

Reima Puro

These rain mittens are my favorite option for chilly spring and fall weather, and make great spring skiing mittens. With a soft liner and excellent waterproofing, these are a great option for wet and chilly weather.

Reima Rain Gear: Quality Kids’ Gear Built to Last

Reima rain gear delivers high-quality gear that’s built to last season after season, long after your kids pass the gear down to the next kid. I love that whether it’s ReimaTec or Reima’s line of rubber rain gear, there’s rain gear that can get the job done to keep your kids dry and warm on wet days.
