Becoming Outdoorsy with Hannah Johnson

Episode 10 Hannah Johnson

Today on episode 10 of Outdoorsy Families, I’m talking with Hannah Johnson about her transition to becoming an outdoorsy person. Hannah grew up spending her summer vacations with family in cabins near the lakes of Wisconsin. She didn’t consider herself “outdoorsy” until she met her husband, Mike. She quickly realized that if she were to have a long term relationship with him she would need to embrace an outdoor lifestyle. Together, they traveled internationally as a couple. Their favorite adventures were to Banff and the Faroe Islands. On these trips, Hannah learned to persevere on challenging hikes after experiencing jet lag. She also experienced peace in these remote destinations.

After having babies, Hannah and Mike continued to travel and explore both locally and internationally. Hannah talked about her top tips for flying internationally with a toddler or infant. Bringing a roll of masking tape is one of her favorite hacks! She also suggests lowering expectations and knowing that this too will pass!

Hannah also shares tips for getting outside while living in an urban setting. She and her family live in Chicago and make the most of their local parks and greenspaces. Their favorite local adventure is heading down to Lake Michigan for a day at the beach! In the winter, you can find them ice skating. Enjoying the outdoors doesn’t need to be a barrier for families who live in a city!
